The Pre-Flight Checklist: A Must For Every Private Pilot's Flight

A private pilot is just like everyone else. He has to have his tools with him when he is embarking on a private pilot flight. Just like a carpenter that can't do without his toolbox, a pilot cannot fly or should not fly without his flight bag and all the items that are necesary to the flight. This would include his survival gear, his documents as well as his preflight checklist. This list will be very crucial to the safety of his operation, especially to the lives of his passengers.

A private pilot actually has a very big responsibility. If anything happens to him and his aircraft, he'll have a lot to answer for. So, being a pilot-in-command, he has the unspoken obligation to himself and the law that he will do everything to make sure that every flight is as safe as it could be. If there's anything that goes wrong, it should be something that was beyond his control like the weather and others. To make sure of that, he has to be able to do a very meticulous pre-flight inspection before he even rolls his aircraft forward to taxi and take off.

Because it is very crucial, the pilot-in-command should not make the mistake of hurrying things up when inspecting an aircraft. True, passengers may be anxious to get forward but keep in mind that it is better to delay an aircraft and have a safe flight, rather than give in to passenger pressure and get off without a completed preflight because it can become nasty if there's something wrong and you've totally missed it during your preflight. For example, you may have missed to check if the fuel tanks are full and you took off in a half-full or, worse, near empty fuel tank.

If you're flying an aircraft that is shared by a group, it is even more imperative that you do a thorough inspection before flying. The previous pilot might have missed something or he has noticed a defect or malfunction in the system that he unfortunately forgot to report when he landed the aircraft. Its fuel tanks might not have been refilled. The list goes on.

So, keep in mind that you should always pack your pre-flight checklist into your flight bag before you go into a flight. Also, don't forget to let your fellow pilots see your list to see that it is comprehensive and touches upon every important matter that you need to address before you can fly the aircraft.
