Summer Camps – How to make most of it

Summer Camp is the hottest topic which pops up among kids as the summer vacations approach. This is one of the best ways for kids to kick off their summer vacation. Summer Camps provide kids with confidence, lasting memories and experiences they can't always get with their siblings; along with all this these camps provide opportunities for children to come up with their strengths and reinforce their gifts and talents.

To make these camps an unforgettable experience, parents really need to plan well in advance and need to take care of minute details. Though these camps can be very interesting but don’t force your children to go for such camps; make sure your child is ready for spending the night away from home. Sometimes kids at an age of seven or eight are enthusiastic for such camps while others at an age of 13-14 would not even give it a thought.

Choosing the right kind of a camp which suits your child’s personality and interest is another vital factor. If this is the first time sleep-away camp experience for your child, then camps with general focus are recommended by many counselors so that kids can discover their area of interest. You can search for the summer camps on internet and can interview their camp directors about the activities and innovative programs they have in their camp or can ask them to design the camp experience to meet your child’s needs. Ask the camp director if you can visit the camp in person before deciding that both you and your children feel more comfortable with your choice. Enrollments for these camps mostly are done between December and March so make sure not to wait too long as you may not be able to find an opening. Non-profit and service organizations such as church groups, YMCA, YWCA, Boy Scouts of America and Girl Scouts of the USA also arrange camps which cost less than privately run camps.

Once you are done with enrollments, next is to pack necessary things to ensure that your child is comfortable when away from home. Along with regular clothing, put rain gear and rubber boots for wet weather and warmer clothing for cold. Swim suits, two bathing towel one for bathing and one for swimming, spare shoes and a hat for sun protection are must pack. Check if your child needs to carry a tent and a sleeping bag or they will be provided with the cabins and bedding. Don’t forget to pack sunscreen, a lip balm with SPF and pack some favorite toys of your child to keep them entertained. Put labels of name of your child on each item to avoid any misplacement of their belongings.

These camps can build confidence among children to take care of themselves while enjoying in a group. On their return, ask them about their experiences on the trip and encourage them to make a scrapbook of their summer trip, so that they can cherish these memories for rest of their life.
